Na jarenlang plezier bied ik bij deze mijn Reliant Scimitar coupé uit 1966 aan.
Deze coupé heeft tussen 2000 en 2020 aan tientallen concours-evenementen in het Verenigd Koninkrijk deelgenomen en daar ook meerdere prijzen gewonnen.
Ik heb de auto in 2019 gekocht bij de bekende Scimitar-specialist Graham Walker in Chester, waar de auto jarenlang in onderhoud is geweest. Bij aankoop verkeerde de coupé in concoursstaat en heb ik de auto zelf naar Nederland gereden. Na een grondige inspectie heb ik diverse zaken aangepakt om de auto geschikt te maken voor regelmatig gebruik en voor deelname aan het Concours d’Elegance op Paleis Soestdijk in 2022. In de klasse Gentlemen Sportscars was dat een prachtige ervaring.
De auto functioneert uitstekend en alle elektrische systemen werken naar behoren. De auto heeft overdrive op 3e en 4e versnelling. Het interieur is origineel en in zeer nette staat. Onder de motorkap is alles verzorgd, zonder roest, corrosie of olielekkages. Het chassis en de ophanging zijn niet voorzien van dikke coating maar keurig afgewerkt in hoogglans zwarte lak en volledig roestvrij.

Historie van de Scimitar Coupé
De Reliant Scimitar Coupé (SE4/SE4a) werd geproduceerd van 1964 tot 1970 door Reliant Motors. Het model volgde de Sabre-lijn op en was bedoeld als snelle, stijlvolle Britse GT-coupé met glasvezel carrosserie en een degelijk ladderchassis.
De vroege Scimitar Coupés werden geleverd met de bekende Ford-lijnmotoren uit de Zephyr/Zodiac-reeks. Deze 2.6-liter straight-six staat bekend om zijn soepele loop, sterke trekkracht en karakteristieke geluid. Het geluid van deze Ford-lijn-6 is werkelijk geweldig: een authentieke, mechanische klank die perfect past bij het karakter van de auto en elke rit tot een beleving maakt.
De Scimitar Coupé kende ook een bescheiden competitie- en rallyhistorie in de jaren zestig, waar de combinatie van laag gewicht en betrouwbare Ford-techniek goed tot zijn recht kwam. In 1967 introduceerde Reliant de latere GTE-modellen met de Ford Essex V6. Deze V6 werd uiteindelijk de standaardmotor in de latere Scimitars, maar de oorspronkelijke lijn-6 coupés bleven geliefd bij puristen.
Zeldzaamheid:
De straight-six coupés zijn aanzienlijk zeldzamer dan de latere V6-varianten. Van de Scimitar SE4 en SE4a met lijn-6 zijn in totaal ongeveer circa 1.000–1.200 exemplaren geproduceerd tussen 1964 en 1967. Daarna nam de V6 het over. Een originele lijn-6 coupé in deze staat kom je dan ook niet vaak tegen.
Persoonlijke noot
Samen met mijn zoon heb ik jarenlang enorm genoten van deze Scimitar: ritten, evenementen en concoursbezoeken. Het is een auto met karakter, historie en rijplezier. Nu is het echter tijd om plaats te maken voor een nieuw oldtimer-project.
De Scimitar staat klaar voor een volgende liefhebber die hem wil gebruiken zoals hij bedoeld is: rijden, genieten en eventueel concours rijden.

Between 2000 and 2020 this coupé participated in dozens of concours events in the United Kingdom, where it also won several awards.
I purchased the car in 2019 from the well-known Scimitar specialist Graham Walker in Chester, where the car had been maintained for many years. At the time of purchase the coupé was in concours condition, and I personally drove it back to the Netherlands. After a thorough inspection, I addressed several items to make the car suitable for regular use and for participation in the Concours d’Elegance at Paleis Soestdijk in 2022. Competing in the Gentlemen Sportscars class was a wonderful experience.
The car performs excellently and all electrical systems function as they should. The car has overdrive on 3th and 4th gear. The interior is original and in very tidy condition. Under the bonnet everything is clean and well maintained, with no rust, corrosion or leaks. The chassis and suspension have not been covered with thick undercoating but are neatly finished in high-gloss black paint and completely rust-free.

History of the Scimitar Coupé
The Reliant Scimitar Coupé (SE4/SE4a) was produced from 1964 to 1970 by Reliant Motors. The model succeeded the Sabre line and was intended as a fast, stylish British GT coupé with a fiberglass body and a robust ladder chassis.
Early Scimitar Coupés were fitted with the well-known Ford straight-six engines from the Zephyr/Zodiac range. This 2.6-litre inline-six is known for its smooth running, strong torque and characteristic sound. The sound of this Ford inline-six is truly fantastic: an authentic mechanical note that perfectly suits the character of the car and makes every drive a special experience.
The Scimitar Coupé also had a modest competition and rally history in the 1960s, where the combination of low weight and reliable Ford engineering proved very effective. In 1967, Reliant introduced the later GTE models with the Ford Essex V6. This V6 eventually became the standard engine in later Scimitars, but the original straight-six coupés have remained particularly popular among purists.
Rarity
The straight-six coupés are considerably rarer than the later V6 variants.
Approximately 1,000–1,200 Scimitar SE4 and SE4a cars with the straight-six engine were produced between 1964 and 1967, after which the V6 took over. An original straight-six coupé in this condition is therefore rarely encountered.
Personal note
Together with my son I have enjoyed this Scimitar immensely for many years: drives, events and concours visits. It is a car with character, history and real driving pleasure. However, the time has now come to make room for a new classic car project.
The Scimitar is ready for its next enthusiast — someone who will use it as intended: to drive, enjoy and perhaps participate in concours events.
