Toyota MR2 (SW20) umgebaut auf Ferrari 288 GTO

Details zum Ferrari: der F 288 GTO ist der Vorgänger des F40. Während vom F40 1.315 Stück gebaut wurden, gibt es vom GTO nur 272 Stück, weswegen ein GTO oft das doppelte eines F40 kostet.

Also jene, die nichts von Replicas halten, müssten für einen originalen zwischen 6 und 10 Millionen hinlegen. Eine etwas günstigere Variante wäre ein Replica auf 308er bzw 328er Basis. Da kostet die Basis um € 100.000,- und das Umbau-Kit ca. € 80.000,- also insgesamt dann um die € 200.000,-

Dieses Replica auf MR2-Basis gibt es nur 3 Mal auf der Welt. Die britische Firma, die diesen Umbau vollzogen hat, wurde von Ferrari verklagt und geschlossen. 2 Rechtslenker und dieser eine Linkslenker wurden zuvor gebaut. Mit dem originalen Toyota-Motor ist dieser also der seltenste, günstigste und zuverlässigste GTO, den man kaufen kann. Platz ist im Heck aber auch für größere Motoren genug.

Die Synchronisation des 5. Ganges wurde professionell repariert.

Unterboden versiegelt.

Wasserpumpe neu.

Fahrzeug wurde nur bei Schönwetter bewegt.

Toyota MR2 SW20 – Dave Jones GTE Ferrari 288 GTO Replica – One of Three Built

Offered for sale is an exceptionally rare and fully road-legal Toyota MR2 SW20, professionally converted into a Ferrari 288 GTO recreation by the late British replica specialist Dave Jones.

According to the original manufacturer and period documentation, only three examples of this conversion were completed before Ferrari took legal action against the company, bringing production to an end. Two cars were built in right-hand drive for the UK market, while this example is believed to be the only left-hand-drive car, making it unique.

The car is fully registered and road legal in Austria, with all modifications officially approved and documented.

Unlike many replicas that have undergone extensive engine conversions, this car retains its original and reliable Toyota 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engine producing 156 hp. The drivetrain remains original, making the car easy to maintain while preserving its historical authenticity.


Recent maintenance includes:

- Fresh service
- New water pump
- 5th gear synchronisation professionally repaired
- Underside professionally restored and protected
- Current Austrian roadworthiness inspection passed with no defects


Although the original conversion invoices are no longer available, the car is supported by the period magazine coverage featuring one of the sister cars, documenting the Dave Jones GTE project and its very limited production.

This is not simply another Ferrari-style body kit. It represents a fascinating chapter of British coachbuilding and the replica-car industry of the late twentieth century. Opportunities to acquire one of these cars are exceptionally rare, particularly the only known left-hand-drive example.
